What is lifelong learning?
Lifelong learning is the process by which people continue to learn not only during their school years but throughout every stage of their lives. This process involves more than just acquiring knowledge; it also involves adapting to changing work, social, and living conditions, renewing oneself, and connecting learning to real life.
Lifelong learning encompasses all age groups. However, the field of Lifelong Learning and Adult Education is a particularly important area of expertise for young adults, college students and graduates, teachers, in-house trainers, human resources specialists, and those working in public education, municipal government, and NGOs.
This is because adult education is not merely about conveying content. Needs analysis, learner profiles, experience, motivation, the learning environment, and the transfer of learning to real life must all be considered together.
What is the fundamental question in this field?
Why and how do people learn throughout their lives? How are adults’ learning needs identified? How is an effective learning environment designed? How does the education provided translate into behavior, skills, and development in real life?
Lifelong Learning and Adult Education examines the needs that drive individuals to learn at different stages of life, how their prior experiences influence the learning process, and how learning impacts professional life, social participation, personal development, and organizational transformation.
In short, Lifelong Learning and Adult Education does not view learning solely within the context of school or the classroom. It considers learning as a broad field of expertise that addresses learning within the contexts of life, work, society, experience, and change.
